Building the Chronicle UI
22 May 2026 AD · Year 7534 of the Roman World

The first prototype looked like every other 4X. Health bars, hex grids, a minimap. I hated it. The whole point of choosing 1204 was to tell a story the way the Byzantines themselves would have told it — in chronicles, in marginalia, in small caps and gilt rules.
So we threw it out. The new UI is a single page from an illuminated chronicle: parchment background, IM Fell English for the headings, Cormorant Garamond for the body. Every encounter is a chronicle entry with a charcoal-matted painting set into the page like an inserted plate. Every numeric stat is a sepia annotation, never a bar.
The hard problem was readability at 60Hz. Real manuscripts are messy; games need contrast. We landed on a five-step ink scale — gilt, sepia, crimson, ink, deep ink — and a strict rule: no more than two together on any one panel.
